James M. Murphy, MD, M.Div., Honored for Excellence in Mental Health Care
Dr. James Milton Murphy has published a host of field-related books, chapters, editorial pieces and articles in professional journals

NEW YORK, NY, October 18, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. James Murphy, Retired Psychiatrist and Minister, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in his career.

Prior to his retirement, Dr. Murphy accrued more than five decades of experience in the mental health care field. With a specialty in psychiatry, he used various treatment methods to adminster to his patients, including dance therapy, writing exercises and psychoanalysis. Dr. Murphy is also an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ. He became involved in the mental health care field because he required more training to effectively counsel his parishoners. Today, his areas of expertise include couple, marriage, family and group therapy. He established his private practice in 1963.

A skilled educator, Dr. Murphy has held faculty and adjunct professor positions with Touro College and New York University's graduate dance therapy program. He also taught and supervised students in the marriage and family therapy training program at the Blanton-Peale Graduate Institute in New York, N.Y. for forty years. Furthermore, he has presented at numerous annual conferences of professional therapy organizations. Dr. Murphy is also an avid writer who has published a host of field-related books, chapters, editorial pieces and articles in professional journals. In 1952, Dr. Murphy earned an Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary. He went on to receive an MD from the New York University School of Medicine and complete a rotating internship at Mountainside Hospital and a residency in psychiatry at Manhattan State Hospital. He is a licensed psychoanalyst, licensed creative arts therapist, licensed marriage and family therapist, and licensed mental health counselor in the State of New York. Dr. Murphy retains affiliation with the American Dance Therapy Association, American Psychosomatic Society, Congress on Research in Dance, American Group Psychotherapy Association, and National Association of Poetry Therapy. He is a board member of The New York Quarterly, a life member of the American Psychiatric Association, diplomate of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, and a clinical member, approved supervisor and fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Dr. Murphy's accomplishments have not gone without formal recognition; he has received a number of accolades for his work throughout his career. Most recently, he received an appreciation award from the American Association of Pastoral Counseling for his work with a Korean pastoral care and counseling program. His further honors include a Distinguished Faculty Service Award from the Blanton-Peale Graduate Institute and recognition for significant contribution to the field of marriage and family therapy from the Metro Chapter of the New York Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.
